Photography News: Rumored Sigma Lenses and the Panasonic DC-S5 II Camera

Do you set resolutions for the new year, or do you think they could lead to disappointment? The majority of my resolutions, such as "I'm going to eat less and exercise more," usually become the complete reverse after a few weeks. However, what about making a fresh effort? I make a commitment to myself for 2023 to at least periodically try to shoot my subjects in a unique way. to venture a bit farther from my comfort zone.

Here are some highlights from the first full week of 2023 in the world of photography.

News Releases of Late

A 24.2MP, full-frame L-mount camera from Panasonic with both still-image and video capabilities is the DC-S5 II and DC-S5 IIX (Panasonic puts a lot of emphasis on this). The "X" version will include improved video features like IP streaming capability, Raw video output, and Apple ProRes. On-sensor phase detection AF is the primary novel feature. Additionally, an upgraded in-body image stabilisation system and a new CPU for subject-recognition AF are present. Long videos may be recorded without getting too hot because of the integrated fan (and without harming the weather sealing of the camera). The DC-S5 II and DC-S5 IIX are each priced at $1,998 and $2,198, respectively.

A wide-angle, full-frame lens for L-mount cameras, the Lumix S 14-28mm f/4-5.6 ASPH. 14 elements in 10 groups make up the lens structure. The smallest focusing distance, which is barely 15 cm throughout the entire range, is really intriguing (0.25x to 0.5x magnification ratio). The 77mm front filter thread on the lens weights 345 g. Starting at the end of March, it will cost $798.

7artisans Ultra-wide, fully manual fisheye lens for APS-C Canon EF-mount cameras at 7.5mm f/3.5. It has an integrated petal lens hood and a 205° field of view. There are 11 components with nano multi-layer coatings inside the lens. The cost is $159

The open-source RAW picture editor has released a new version, darktable 4.2.0. Two new highlight recovery algorithms, an enhanced slideshow and user interface, updated image presentation in the darkroom view, and additional innovations are all included in release 4.2.

The Whisperer

The R8 will be Canon's following camera.

The presentation should take place in February at the CP+ event, according to the information on Canonrumors. Beginning on February 23, Japan will host this photography expo. We can anticipate a tonne of news, especially from Sony, Panasonic, and Nikon, as it is the largest event of its sort. And now, back to Canon. The R8 will be positioned between the current R7 and R10 cameras, as the model name suggests. An APS-C sensor with a resolution of 24.2MP is anticipated. Rumor has it that the new camera will also be accompanied by a new RF-S 11-22mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM lens.

Sigma has major stuff in the works.

And I do mean it figuratively. I've previously stated that Sigma has a lot of new Nikon Z-mount lenses planned for 2023. Something might appear as early as next week, according to Photo Rumors. A Sigma 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 Sport lens with improved optics is anticipated to be unveiled as early as January 12. Leica L and Sony E mounts ought to be available for it. Will it be offered for the Nikon Z mount as well? Let's wait and see, though I anticipate a yes.

The three newly patented telephoto lenses from Sigma are also described in detail by Sony Alpha Rumors. There are three of these: the 400mm f/5 OS, 500mm f/5.6 OS, and 700mm f/8 OS. The patents could also apply to the Leica L and Nikon Z, if they come to pass. They might offer a fascinating substitute for lenses like the Nikon Z 400mm f/4.5 and Nikon 500mm f/5.6E PF.

This future lens with a distinctive range of focal lengths was already mentioned to you. A Sony Alpha Rumors source claims that the lens could debut as early as January 17. The lens should cost at around $1600. The Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 24-70mm f/4 lens costs almost twice as much, but the unusual wide-angle focal length might be worth it.

Good bargains and fresh sales

You may now take a break and start saving money for later in the year as the season of bargains is finished. However, there are still some discounts available on practical products that you might need for 2023. such as memory cards. A popular SDXC Memory Card with a decent price/reliability/performance ratio is SanDisk's 256GB Extreme PRO UHS-II for $280 (was $400). I may suggest the Delkin Devices 128GB POWER for $149 (was $220) or the SanDisk 256GB Extreme PRO for $260 (was $400) among the CFexpress Type B cards. Do you need cards with a lot of storage if you're filming video? A pair of 2TB Wise Advanced CFX-B cards will offer plenty of space for $1000 (original price $1,800).
